The PERMA model was designed by American psychologist and educator Dr. Martin Seligman, and it essentially stands for Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishments.
Dr Seligman has devoted much of his career exploring what makes life worth living, and how to define, quantify, and create wellbeing. Dr. Seligman’s Positive Psychology approach focuses on strengths and people’s ability to flourish/trhive.
The PERMA model comprises of five key areas which we’ve summarised as follows:
- Positive emotion: spending time on positive experiences that can help with happiness, self-esteem, feelings of satisfaction and gratitude.
- Engagement: applying your strengths to a task and allowing yourself to become immersed.
- Relationship: positive connections with others in person or virtually.
- Meaning or purpose: an action contributing to a larger goal or something outside of yourself e.g. community, family, friends.
- Achievement experiencing a sense of accomplishment and managing setbacks, achieving goals, no matter how small.
